Less than an hour by boat from Sihanoukville, tiny Koh Russei (Bamboo Island) was recently cleard of most resorts in preparation for a high-end development that has yet to materialise. Just one resort remained at the time o research, on a pretty beach at the back of island, backpacker-friendly Koh Ru. The bungalows are rudimentary and share bathrooms with scoop showers. You get a few hours of electricity after sunset. The daily boat out here costs US$10 return.
