Stung Treng Province

For along while, poor Stung Treng Province was the neglected middle child, sandwiched between the luminary siblings of Ratanakiri Province and Kratie Province, not to mention the languid charms of Champasak in southern Laos. But with spiffy new border post and a network of recently upgraded roads now plugging Stung Treng into the rest of the country, the province may finally cash in on its tourism potential.
Much of that potential lies near the northern village of O'Svay, where several ecotourism initiatives have recently been launched on a sublime stretch of the Mekong. Here you can kayak out to a pod of rare Irrawaddy dolphins near the Lao border, passing islands, waterfalls, and bird-infested wetlands on the way.

The stretch of the Mekong between O'Svay and Stung Treng town can be explored by bicycle, boat or motorbike. From Stung Treng you can proceed by motorbike or boat to remote Siem Pang on the border of Virachey National Park, an area rich in birds and other wildlife.
Many more travellers are crossing the Cambodia-Laos border at Trapaeng Kriel, but few stop for long in Stung Treng. Those who do take some time to explore will be wll do take some time to explore will be well ahead of the tourist pack.
